Invasive Alien Species are plants, animals, pathogens and other organisms that are non-native to an ecosystem, and which may cause economic or environmental harm to biodiversity. In a joint effort to combat the number of invasive alien species the EU has put together a Union list including the species in question. On a regular basis the discussion arises to add additional species to the list, which in turns effects growers, municipalities, management and maintenance administrators when it concerns a species grown or present within their respective area.
In the Netherlands there are several parties working together in an effort to translate this European approach towards the situation at hand in the Netherlands. Association Stadswerk Nederland and VNG are both represented in the workgroup ‘Management and Elimination’ which put together management and elimination plans in respect to Invasive Alien Species. Also included in this group on our behalf are several municipalities.
